Hot Flashes and Menopause

Hot flashes are one of the most common symptoms of menopause experienced by women. Hot flashes are defined as intense waves of bodily heat.

Usually, hot flashes occur around the face, neck, and chest, where the upper body experiences sudden warmth. It is common to sweat one minute and shiver the next due to the hormonal changes associated with menopause.

Hot flashes are often worse in the summer months due to increased temperatures and humidity but can occur at any time due to hormonal changes associated with menopause. Unfortunately, there is no cure for hot flashes, but there are ways to manage them and reduce their frequency.

Manage Hot Flashes in Summer

Menopause symptoms, like hot flashes, can be unyielding and unfriendly! They’re just one of the things that annoy women experiencing perimenopause and menopause.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to manage hot flashes, especially this summer.

  1. Choose natural fabrics.

Choose natural fabrics for bed linens and clothes during the summer, as they are also breathable. Fabrics made from natural fibers such as cotton, linen, cotton-linen blends, and bamboo are ideal for both clothing and bed linens.

Natural fabrics are perfect for warm climates, dry heat, and hot weather. They are non-irritating and have moisture-wicking properties, keeping you dry if you sweat regularly.

  2. Drink ice water.

Beat the sweltering heat this summer by having ice water with you all the time. When you experience hot flashes, drinking ice water can help you feel more comfortable and lower your body temperature. Drinking water quenches your thirst and makes you feel refreshed.

Use double-walled tumblers that you can bring anywhere, whether at the office or the mall. Insulated tumblers made from stainless steel keep beverages cold for several hours. They can also keep ice from melting too fast.

  3. Dress in layers.

Choosing what to wear when you’re hot and sweaty can be challenging. However, those hot moments are often followed by chills as well!

Dressing in layers is an important tip! You’ll want to wear layers that are easy to remove and can stand alone to help relieve hot flashes. It’s important not to feel too exposed once you remove a top layer.

Think of cotton or cotton-linen blend tanks and tees, which you can layer with a linen blouse or shirt. Wrap a light linen scarf or kaftan around your shoulders when you get a chill, and remove it during a hot flash.

  4. Cut back on caffeine and alcohol.

The energy boost you get from your morning cup of coffee may not be all it is. Caffeine in your coffee can make your menopause symptoms worse.

Similarly, alcoholic beverages can also trigger hot flashes. A glass of wine once or twice a week is unlikely to affect your symptoms. However, your health and well-being could suffer if you drink more than one drink daily.

In addition to triggering hot flashes, both caffeine and alcohol may interfere with sleep and may also exacerbate anxiety and depression. If hot flashes and insomnia become a problem, cutting back on caffeine and alcohol can help to avoid triggering them.

  5. Avoid spices or spicy food.

It is not surprising that spicy foods can make hot flashes worse. Foods that rate high on the heat scale can trigger sweating, flushing, and other symptoms of hot flashes. Avoid spicy foods such as hot peppers, jalapenos, and cayenne if you feel hot or have high blood pressure.

  6. Stay cool on hot summer days and nights.

Use a cold compress to keep you cool this summer. Take an ice pack or washcloth out of the freezer and place it on your head or around your neck whenever you need it to feel cool.

If you are in a hot environment for an extended period, you are more likely to develop a hot flash. In the summer, especially during heat waves, staying inside is a good idea, at least during the hottest part of the day.
